Self-care for You and Mother Nature

We at Silver Vase believe self-care is one of the most important things a person can do, and we love that our orchids get to be a part of your self-care routine. But did you know that our orchids are also good for the environment?

Silver Vase prides itself on our sustainable practices. We believe in not just bringing smiles to the faces of flower lovers, but also making the planet more habitable for the future of humankind as a whole.

From the Ground up

As with any good business, our sustainability practices start with the ground up—meaning the soil! The soil we use for our orchids is a unique mix of lumber and bark, coconut, and a few other secret ingredients. 😉

And the best part? The best part is that's it's all locally produced! We prioritize local growers to reduce our contribution to carbon emissions via freight shipping. This may not seem like much, but trust us, it makes a big difference when there are millions of orchids to pot!

Water, Water, Everywhere

The next thing that's essential to growing our plants is water, of course. As a Florida based company, we understand how limited a resource freshwater can be, so we are constantly working to use water more efficiently.

Silver Vase utilizes two sources for our water. The first is called Reverse Osmosis—or RO for short. RO allows us to filter well water, ensuring it's clean for our plants and any unused water during irrigation is released back into the Florida water table, so none is wasted.

Our second source is provided by mother nature herself, rain collection. Each Silver Vase greenhouse is equipped with gutters connected to a silo that can store rainwater until we are ready to use it in irrigation.

Paper or Plastic?

Well, both. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find a material to replace plastic entirely, as most other materials degrade before our plants can reach their new homes. We do, however, utilize plastics that can be reused (for up to 15 years! 😱) or recycled (after a year and a half of use). We have also identified areas where plastic isn't necessary, in those areas we use paper products. Like trays to hold plants during shipping and production.

We also work to reduce our paper usage where possible, especially in the office, and recycle all paper waste. Every little bit helps!
